Reason: Cane Toad HISTORY:Marcus was brought in following exposure to a cane toad at approximately 7:15 PM. Owner reports Marcus was chasing the toad around the corner of their deck and briefly attempted to grab it before responding to drop command. Following the incident, Marcus went inside and exhibited increased salivation, some spitting behaviour, and tongue movement. Owner appropriately wiped mouth immediately following incident. On examination, Marcus shows no clinical signs of cane toad toxicity. Mucous membranes pink with no residual salivation or neurological abnormalities. Given the time elapsed since exposure and absence of clinical signs, prognosis is excellent.TREATMENT:Mouth wiping performed by nursing staffPLAN:Home monitoring recommended. Owner comfortable with home observation given proximity to clinic (15 minutes away). Monitor for neurological signs including tremors, twitching, vomiting or altered mentation. If any concerning signs develop, return immediately for assessment.CLIENT COMMUNICATION:Advised owner that cane toad toxicity signs typically develop within minutes of exposure. Given time elapsed (2 hours) and absence of clinical signs, risk of developing toxicity is less than 1%. Educated on signs to monitor including tremors, twitching, vomiting, and neurological changes. Advised that progression from normal to severe signs is gradual, not sudden. Recommended taking photo of current gum colour for comparison if future exposure occurs. Advised to continue mouth wiping technique (back to front) until sliminess disappears if future exposure occurs. Normal water and food intake permitted.
