Reason for visit: Anal glands and
History:
1/ Anal glands. Right bigger than left. Occasional scooting. No licking. Gets psyllium husk daily.
2/ Pimple on upper left lip. Owner has expressed it twice. Yellow stuff comes out. 
3/ Check teeth. They get brushed daily.
4/ Do nails need doing?

Examination:
1/ Yes. Expressed
2/ Whisker follicle. Not inflamed. 
3/ No gingivitis or recession. Some plaque in grooves of molars where brush doesn't quite reach.
4/ Long dew claws front feet.

Assessment:
1/ Anal glands normal content
2/ Whisker follicle normal
3/ Grade 1 soft plaque

Plan:
1/ Expressed anal glands
2/ No follicle treatment needed. Leave it alone. Whisker will emerge.
3/ Continue brushing
4/ Trimmed dew claws

MC review picture- could be small worm rather than mucous? Regardless rec 60mL tube of prokolin to help restore the correct balance of gut bacteria, a few cans of i/d may also be beneficial otherwise continue bland diet until several days of normal stool then slowly transition back to regular food, and would rec giving an all wormer/paragard just in case

9/1 called o, relayed above, emailed o as well to go over everything that was mentioned, o will come by clinic to pick up pro-kolin + i/d cans CR

o called, explained that junior was experiencing d+, o switched to bland diet and junior bowels have improved since, o did notice mucus showing in poo, left f/u for vet to see if that is a concern + whether o needs to book appointment CR

December 11th Junior had a collitis episode for a few days, not sure the trigger ( could have been a piece of nandos chicken  he got from the garbage ) 

I put him on boiled rice and lean 5% bland beef mince for a week and the diarrhea, blood and mucus stopped relatively quickly, maybe after 3 or so days. 


Over the Christmas and new years period he had gotten into some beef steaks, aswell as snatching small cucumbers from family members for a few days. 


Fast forward to last weekend I noticed he was having frequent bowel movements between 3 and 5 a day they were normal looking at the time just frequent. 
 

Then on Sunday evening he had a softer stool with bright fresh blood again. He was also noticeably tired. 

This also continued into Monday. 

I put him back on bland diet Monday, at the moment he has had normal frequency stools since Tuesday, no blood since Tuesday morning either and his energy returned Monday evening. 

He does however still have mucus in his stools that are normal formed now. 


What is your thoughts? 

Should I continue on the rice and lean beef mince or is the beef mince possibly still irritating his gut. 


His appetite, hydration and energy levels are great. 

I have provided a photo of the most recent stool it was a small one he passed on our walk last night with the mucus trailing.

Hi Phillip, 

The vet has recommended to pick up a 60ml bottle of Pro-Kolin from our clinic to help restore the correct balance of gut bacteria for Junior. A few cans of ‘Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care Chicken & Vegetable Stew Dog Wet Food’ may be beneficial for Junior, you can find them online otherwise we do keep stock of it on our shelves.  The vet did also say you can continue giving Junior a bland diet until several days of normal stool then slowly transition back to normal food. You did mention over the phone that you are up to date with all worming preventatives which is great!
