There was a recent diet change from chicken to an all meat mix.- Known to ingest non-food items (e.g., cotton, grass).- Parasite prevention: Simparica Trio administered monthly.Objective- Demeanour: Bright, alert, responsive. H 4+.- HR: 120 bpm, RR: panting, MM p/m, CRT < 2 sec, T: 38.8- BCS: 5/9, Hydration: Clinically adequate.- Exam: - Cardiovascular: Normal auscultation, no murmur or arrhythmia. - Respiratory: Thoracic auscultation clear bilaterally, normal respiratory effort. - Oral: No cleft palate, otherwise unremarkable. - Abdominal: Non-painful on palpation. - Rectal: small amount lf loose stool with + mucous and very small amount fresh blood. - Urogenital: Both testicles descended. - Musculoskeletal: Ambulating normally, no pain on palpation. - Integument/Ears: Ears clean, skin unremarkable. - Other systems: Neurologically, lymph nodes, eyes all NSF.Diagnostics- Faecal analysis (in-house smear): Showed a slight overgrowth of rod-shaped bacteria.- Faecal sample sent to IDEXX for faecal float.Assessment- Gastroenteritis with dysbiosis.- Differentials include dietary indiscretion/intolerance, infectious causes (e.g., bacterial, parasitic), or inflammatory bowel-type disease.Plan- Metronidazole 200 mg: 1 tablet PO BID for 5 days.- Protexin Pro-Kolin: 3 mL PO BID until stools are normal.- Dispensed Milpro tablet to be used today and thereafter every 3 months.- Advised a temporary change to a gastrointestinal diet (Hill's Prescription Diet i/d).- Discussed transitioning to a kibble-based diet long-term if signs recur.- Counselled the owner on the correct administration frequency for Simparica Trio (every 4 weeks). Follow-up: - The owner is to monitor for resolution of clinical signs. - Advised to return for re-evaluation if diarrhoea does not resolve or recurs after treatment. - May need abdominal x-rays or blood tests for chronic diarrhoea work-up. - Await external laboratory results for faecal float (expected within 24 hours).
