Canine cutaneous melanocytic tumours varywidely in their biological behavior and predicting malignancy can be difficult based on histopathology alone.Prognostic assessment for these tumours is multifactorial, incorporating histologic and clinical features, includingclinical stage. In this context, afavorable prognosis relates to expected survival times longer than one year and a poor prognosis relates to anexpected death due to melanocytic neoplasia within less than one-year post-diagnosis for all melanocytic neoplasms.This assessment does not account for clinical stage or treatment.Clinical staging is warranted in this case and will likely be prognostically significant. Melanomas have significantpotential for metastasis, most often to regional lymph nodes and lungs. Enlarged regional lymph nodes draining theprimary tumour site should be examined by cytology or histopathology to check for metastasis. Consultation with anoncologist may be warranted to guide further management.Additional prognostic information may be obtained by performing immunohistochemistry (IHC) for Ki67 (as part of theMelanoma Prognostic Panel; code MSUMEL). Evaluation of the growth fraction by the Ki67 index has been shown tobe highly predictive of the biological behaviour of canine cutaneous and oral melanocytic neoplasms. For example, itis helpful in cases where the prognostically significant histologic parameters give mixed results or are at/near thethreshold values, to provide further prognostication. This is therefore recommended for further characterisation in thiscase, if it will alter clinical management. There is a variable amount of pale pink cytoplasm that in some areas contains pigment consistentwith melanin. There is moderate (less than 20%) nuclear atypia and nucleoli are often prominent.
