CARDIAC CONSULT REPORT ATTACHEDDIAGNOSIS:1. Normal heart2. Innocent murmurASSESSMENT:The echocardiogram reveals a structurally and functionally normal heart. There is no evidence of any formof congenital or acquired heart disease.Based on the echocardiographic findings, the murmur represents a benign βinnocentβ murmur. This occurscommonly in young puppies (i.e., < 2 months) but usually resolves by ~ 4 months of age. For unknownreasons, some dogs have a persistent or intermittent heart murmur their entire life. This is particularlycommon in certain breeds of dog, such as Boxers and Sighthounds, but can occur in any breed.RECOMMENDATIONS:Although the persistence of an innocent murmur is atypical, it is not of clinical concern. Percy does notrequire monitoring or recheck evaluations for this condition. Additionally, anesthesia can be performedwithout an increased risk of complications.Although the echocardiogram today revealed a normal heart, this does not preclude the development ofheart disease in the future. Consequently, if the murmur changes or becomes significantly louder in thefuture, further evaluation may be necessary as in any other dog.Medication summary:No cardiac medications are indicated.ANESTHESIA:There is no specific contraindication to anesthesia or any specific sedative or anesthetic agents.FOLLOW-UP:No cardiac follow-up is required unless Percy develops new evidence of heart disease.
