08/03/2026 SUBJECTIVE:Fed a raw lamb shank last night
When they got home Bentley has been constantly retching/gagging and bringing up foam
Ate breakfast but this has continued all day, not settling
UTD vacc and not mixing with other dogs recently

OBJECTIVE:B+A

chest NAD
temp 38.5
constant retching in consult with foam produced, sensitive on palpation larynx/trachea

ASSESSMENT:

PLAN:ddx trauma from bone, FB (very unlikely oesophageal given presentation), canine cough
discussed trial anti-inflamm injection and monitor v. xrays /EUGA to chk for bones
Owners going o/s in 36hrs and prefer to r/o anything serious
Plan is to admit for GA, examine pharynx, neck/chest xrays. if nothing seen permission given for scope of trachea and oesophagus.

Given 1200mg gabapentin PO at 5pm 

CLIENT COMMUNICATION:Owners would be very keen to pick Bentley up as soon as procedure done - call anytime overnight and they will come in 
They advise Bentley likely to be very anxious in hosptial
Advised may not be done tonight if emergencies


09/03/2026 SUBJECTIVE: Night 1 hospitalisation for coughing and gagging

OBJECTIVE:

+ve tracheal pinch -- regurgitated after coughing
soft abdomen
Overweight

Butorphanol 0.2mg/kg IV given
Indiced with ketamine and diazepam IV
Larynx unremarkable - no lesions or areas of concerns
ET tube placed size 10.5

Radiographs performed on neck, chest and abdomen
No sign of FB in oesophagus, or bone in stomach
Trachea unremakable
Radiographs unremarkable

ASSESSMENT:
Coughing
Gagging
Retching
ddx: kennel cough, irritation from bone ingestion

PLAN:
TGH with codeine and omeprazole

COMMUNICATION:
nil overnight


09/03/2026 D/C notes: 
Bentley has been a wonderful patient in hospital! 

He was hospitalised for gagging/retching/coughing. X-rays were performed and there were no signs of bone obstruction. The coughing may be due to irritation or potential kennel cough. 

We are happy to send Bentley home for monitoring. We are sending him home with medication - please give as instructed. Both can be started this morning. 

Please keep him indoors and rested for the next week. 

Please monitor for signs of being unwell - not eating, coughing more, being painful, lethargic, etc. Please bring him back for reassessment if you have any concerns. 

Please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. We wish Bentley a speedy recovery!
