If your pet's condition deteriorates or they become flat or lethargic, go off their food and water, develop vomiting or diarrhoea or if you have any concerns please contact the Animal Emergency Service or your regular vet immediately.If your pet is going home and has a pressure wrap over where an IV catheter was placed please remove it within 20 minutes of leaving the hospital.Thank you for trusting the Animal Emergency Service with the care of your pet.DISCHARGE NOTES  ASSESSMENT: Suspected haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE)  Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis is characterised by a sudden onset of vomiting and large volumes of bloody diarrhoea. Dogs are often otherwise healthy and many cases occur suddenly without warning. HGE is most common in small and toy breed dogs, however can affect any breed at any age. Clinical signs include large volumes of red liquid diarrhoea often accompanied by lethargy, inappetance and a painful abdomen. The exact cause remains unknown; this is referred to as idiopathic. It is possibly associated with dietary indiscretion (change in diet or scavenging), toxins or pancreatitis. Intestinal parasites and bacteria may also be contributing factors. Once your pet has had an episode of HGE they are more likely to developing HGE again in the future. If left untreated HGE can become life-threatening. Treatment can involve aggressive supportive care including intravenous fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication, pain relief, antibiotics and medications to protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. In severe cases, if blood loss is large enough a blood transfusion may be required to save your pets life. Prognosis is generally good if treatment is sought promptly and your pet responds well to treatment.   DIAGNOSTICS AND MANAGEMENT: Pain relief  Anti-nausea medications   SPECIFIC HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS  The underlying cause of HGE is unknown, however some suggestions to help prevent recurrence include feeding a high quality commercial diet, limiting other foods and treats and ensure your pet is up to date with parasite prevention such as worming. Monitor your pet closely for any signs of bloody diarrhoea or feeling unwell, as early treatment is essential in getting your pet home as soon as possible.    Exercise: In order to facilitate your pets recovery, strict rest is recommended until they are back to full health and then gradually reintroducing walks.    Diet: Avoid feeding any table scraps, raw foods including chicken wings and necks and try not to vary their diet.   Medications:  Ondansetron Wafer 8mg Please put 2 wafers on the gums to dissolve every 8 hours for anti-nausea. Pain relief - Luna can have 1 x 500mg tablet orally morning and night for pain relief as required over the next 3 days.  What to look for at home: 1. If your pet shows any signs of bloody diarrhoea, is inappetant or generally lethargic please re-check with Animal Emergency Services or your regular veterinarian as soon as possible.  2. Even if your pet appears to be doing well, it is strongly recommended that they have a check up with your regular veterinarian in 3 days.  If your pet is going home and has a pressure wrap over where an IV catheter was placed please remove it within 20 minutes of leaving the hospital.
