Reason: glands flushed under sedation. Gaba/trazodone given this am. ComfortableHas been shaking head. Sally wants ears checked. Current diet: kibble, meat, human food. PE: BAR, euhydrated, HR 120. Chill meds- provided mild calming. Sedation: 0.02mg/kg acp + 0.2mg/kg methadone + 10ug/kg medetomdine- very good sedation. IV catheter placed but not neededFlow-by mask oxygen. Reversed with atipamazole IM afterwards. Procedure: 1. Expressed both glands easily. Left gland has some chunkey brown discharge but easy to express no blood. Right gland mod full easy to express brown liquid discharge. Flushed glands saline. Instilled 1ml dermotic via lubricated blue catheter tip bilaterally. 2. Checked ears. Mild erythema and minimal wax AU. Ear drums intact. Cytology: 1 yeast on slide AU. Neptra 1 vial AU. Plan: monitor ears. 1 dose should be ok. If scoots again future consider anal sacculectomy. Estimate provided. Try adding carrots/ psyllium. comms: --- 05/03/2026 10:20:56 LD:Spoke with Sally. 1 yeast on entire slide could be normal vs early ear infection if there is consistent shaking. Sally oked us instil slow release 2 weeks meds. Should not need another dose. Sally was asking if the abs caused this. Explained most ear infections are dt allergies, humidity, swimming no known link oral abs and ear infections. Asked about anal sacculectomy. Will be candidate if issues occur again. One scoot every now and then not concerned or after toileting but if having regular scoots may be an issue. Trial diet change first eg adding carrots/ psyllium. May also be conformational or the consistency of the discharge itself that is an issue. Discharge booked with James 5:30pm.    Vital Signs    Weight: 22.7;       

Discharge summary for FrankieThank you for bringing Frankie to Allambie Vet.Frankie has been in hospital being treated for anal gland flush under sedation so she may be a little sleepy today. The glands were expressed. The discharge was no longer bloody. The material was flocculent, but easy to express. Antibiotic liquid was instilled into both glands for completion of course. Her ears were assessed- there was mild redness. There were very few yeast in both ears under the microscope. This could be a normal amount or very early ear infection. Given she is shaking her head we have treated her ears today. 1 dose of a slow release ear medication was instilled into both ears (neptra). The irritation could be secondary to allergies and/ or humidity.  Plan:We would like to see Frankie again if she continues to be bothered by her ears and/or glands. Try adding some grated carrot/ psyllium husk to the diet (start with 1 teaspoon daily). Discontinue if excessive flatulence and contact us. If scooting regularly again in future I would consider anal sacculectomy surgery (removal of both glands). We will email some more information about this procedure.
