Exogenous steroids cause low levels of cortisol in normal dogs. They feedback, turn off ACTH, and cause adrenal atrophy, so cortisol drops. Some steroids crossreact and are measured as cortisol - prednisone, prednisolone, methylpred and hydrocortisone. If you try to measure cortisol when those are in the bloodstream (i.e., within 12 hours of receiving a dose), then cortisol can be artifactually elevated.
