•	Presenting complaint (s):  
presented to SASH over the weekend for emergency cat fight abscess 
prescribed antimicrobials and antiinflammatories and sent home for medical management after lancing and lavage
presented today for 3d re-check 
ate breakfast this am with meds 
has soft stools noticed by husband after arriving at vet
she has been taking meds well 
did not tolerate cone
•	EDDU:  normal 
•	No V+  
•	Mobility:  fine
•	Vaccination:  utd
•	Parasite prevention:  utd
•	Current meds:  amoyclauv and meloxicam 
Examination:  
•	FAS:  3/5 freeze but oh such a lovely girl 
•	BAR
•	CV: normal sounds and rhythm  
•	Resp:  clear 
•	Eyes:  clear, no bletharospasm, no discharge or erythemia 
•	Ears:  clear 
•	Oral:  dg 1/4
•	Msk:  nad
•	Integ:  there is a large (5c coin sized) scabbed region where the the abscess had been lanced, on assessment and cleaning with dilute iodine sit became apparent that the overlaying scab was lifting off revealing an open wound. wound edges looked relatively clean although slightly old (thickened)
•	Abdo palp:  soft and comfortable  
•	BCS:  4/5 
Assessment: 
•	Problem list:  open facial wound from cat fight access 

Plan: 
admission for surgical closure and drain placement 




surgery:

PreGA blood- CBC only (comp done 3mth ago). mild hypochromic anaemia and mild basophilia 

Premed: Medetomidine 2mcg/kg + Meth 0.3 mg/kg IV and 1mg/kg maropitant IV
GA induction: Alfaxalone @ 2 mg/kg IV.
GA maintenance: Isoflurane @ 1% / Oxygen @ 1 L/min via size ETT.
Mistral air warming device used throughout procedure
Vital parameters:
bp and oxygenation good throughout
ETCO2 measured throughout
Stable vitals throughout surgery.

Surgery:

area was clipped and prepped with dilute iodine (ear and throat packed to avoid spillage and eye covered while cleaning 

Size 15 scalpel blade used to excise wound edges 
Draining tract was followed about 2cm distally on the cheek 
A small incision was made at the distal most aspect of the wound for Penrose drain placement 

3/0 surgicryl for simple interrupted SC curried sutures x2 in SC later
4/0 nylon cruciate and single interrupted sutures used for skin apposition and to fix drain 


Routine recovery
monitored by nursing staff until sitting up and temp normalised

Post-op. Pain relief: 0.015mg/kg buprenorphine PO BID

Home with: cone and buprenorphine 
STOP meloxicam and cont AMs

O contacted on recovery and discharge arranged 

Plan:
drain removal in 3-4 days and keep clean 
s/r 10-14d
discussed post-op care
