Diagnosis1. Multifocal moderate hyperplastic and superficial perivascular dermatitis with multifocal parakeratotic and serocellular crusting, multifocal subcorneal pustule formation, basilar cell hyperplasia and patchy superficial dermal congestion and edema, Skin biopsies. CommentsThe biopsies are essentially similar and are consistent with a superficial bacterial pyoderma with accompanying superficial dermal infiltrates of neutrophils, small lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages. Special stains show large numbers of gram-positive cocci in the areas of subcorneal pustule formation and in the serocellular crusts. Staphylococcus pseudointermedius is the usual cause of this condition. Fungal stains are negative. Eosinophils are not prominent component of the inflammatory response and there is no evidence of calcinosis cutis or folliculitis. However superficial bacterial pyoderma can be secondary to other diseases including allergies, parasites (none seen), hormonal imbalances or environmental factors. Bacterial cultures may be required if the condition does not respond to appropriate antibiotics. Ann CrowleyVeterinary Pathologist. O CONTACT DISPENSE MEDS1741- AS called O, no answer. Hi Aviva, I hope that Pixel is recovering from her procedure well? Do her biopsy sites seem to be healing well? I tried calling just now but I appreciate you may be at work. I have had the outstanding results back for Pixel; overall it looks like she has a superficial pyoderma. This is interesting as whilst is explains the skin lesions, dogs with this condition are normally very itchy! On the cultures we noted a heavy growth of Staphylococcus schleiferi and smaller amounts of E. Coli. The positive news is that no signs of calcinosis cutis were seen. At this point, I would recommend she receives a course of an antibiotic, cephalexin (both isolates were sensitive to this on the culture) for 7 days. If you are happy to do so, this will be ready to collect from reception whenever you are next nearby. Also, are you able to pop in on Friday or Monday just for me to check her biopsy sites/ remove the sutures? If it is easier for me to call you to discuss these results further, please do let me know. I am away from the hospital tomorrow but I am back again on Thursday. Best wishes,Adam.
