Reason: Rat ingestionHISTORY:Presented after suspicion of having ingested rat around 11pm.Owner had not been observing the process, but Chanel and another husky at home had been hunting a rat. Following induction of emesis, an entire rat was recovered whole in the vomitus. It is unlikely to lead to secondary rodenticide toxicity at this stage, given how the rat was brought up. There is also a low risk of leptospirosis given the geographic area where the rat was found. She recovered uneventfully from the emesis. TREATMENT:Emesis - Apomorphine 0.06mg/kg SC - Metoclopramide 0.5mg/kg SC following emesis.PLAN:Owner to monitor closely at home for any gastrointestinal signs. Option to perform coagulation testing in 48 hours time to be extremely cautious, but not anticipated to have had any toxicities. DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONSPlease read through the following instructions to help guide your pet’s recovery. Post Emesis   Your pet has been administered a medication to induce vomiting (emesis) to try and remove a suspected object or toxin from the stomach (hunted rat). Fortunately, she has successfully brought this up. They have also been administered an anti-nausea medication to reduce the risk of further vomiting.  Monitoring at home: * It is possible that your pet may have a further vomit, if this does occur it is likely to occur within 15-30 minutes of discharge. * The medications administered may also cause some sedation for up to an hour and should be closely monitored for the first few hours once at home. * It is not recommended to feed your pet within the first 2 hours after having induced vomiting. * If there is continued vomiting, your pet becomes dull or lethargic or there are any other concerns, please contact the Perth Veterinary Emergency or your primary care veterinarian immediately.   Recheck: We recommend a recheck with your primary care veterinarian within 48 hours to monitor your pet’s condition. It is unlikely to cause any issues now that she has brought up the entire rat - however, if wanting to be cautious, a coagulation test can be performed in 48 hours; prior to this, there will be no abnormalities showing up. Your other dog can also have the coagulation test performed, and monitoring closely for any signs of obstruction which may include inappetance, vomiting or diarrhoea.    If your pet is going home and has a pressure wrap over where an IV catheter was placed please remove it within 20 minutes of leaving the hospital. If your pet's condition is not improving or if other problems develop, please call your primary care veterinarian or if it is outside their normal working hours, please call Perth Vet Emergency.
