REASON: Vomiting and diarrhoea with bright blood in faeces. Anal gland check due.

HISTORY:
Episode of vomiting and diarrhoea with bright red blood in faeces occurred last Sunday. Blood was described as squirting out when Patsy got worked up. No bleeding since Sunday. Normal faeces since then.
Ongoing intermittent nausea with occasional vomiting episodes lasting a couple of days, then resolves and appetite returns.
History of anal gland issues. Previous anal gland expression 3 months ago revealed pasty material with possible infection causing irritation.
Currently receiving tablets for nausea.

APPETITE: Hungry after episode resolved. Eating well currently.

ACTIVITY: Back to normal self.

TOILETING: Episode of bloody diarrhoea last Sunday, now resolved. Normal faeces since.

CURRENT MEDICATIONS: Tablets for nausea (dose and frequency not specified).

**ASSESSMENT:**
Episode of haematochezia likely consistent with colitis secondary to dietary indiscretion. Common presentation, typically self-limiting if one-off.
Anal gland disease - ongoing management required.
Hindlimb joint issues anticipated in future.

DISCUSSION:
Discussed that bleeding from bowel in dogs is common and often due to digestive misadventures causing colitis. Typically presents with straining, bloody faeces, but dog remains bright, eating and maintaining energy levels.
If one-off and resolved, monitor eating, drinking and weight. If persistent or regular episodes, further investigation warranted.
Anal glands discussed - difficult to express due to likely narrow or scarred gland openings. Ongoing issues expected.
Dietary fibre supplementation may help with anal gland issues. Options include Glandex, Metamucil, pumpkin, bran or brown rice.
Nurse anal gland expression available as an option.

TREATMENT:
Anal gland expression performed.
Continue current nausea tablets.

PLAN:
Monitor for ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms.
Return if persistent or recurrent bleeding from faeces.
Nurse appointments available for ongoing anal gland expression as needed.
