SOme seeds in colon passed (all seeds have now passed)Diet: Very keen for food, running around house asking for breakfast but has been withheld foodV/D/C/S: Screaming episodes - very unusual behaviour for this patient who normally doesn't make noiseCurrent Meds: 100mg Gabapentin given at 01:00 this morning (from previous supply for another dog's disc issues)Other:- Episode began suddenly at midnight after normal dinner and behaviour- Patient was screaming and refusing to walk- Unable to lie down initially - would squeal and sit back up when attempting to rest- Spent most of night on bed with head resting on owner's legs- By 03:00 was able to lie down with head propped up after Gabapentin 100mg administration (O self-directed)- When stretched out with legs down or when weight placed on hind legs with abdomen stretched, patient screams- Was hunched posture last night- Turning around and chewing on back foot, trying to stretch - unusual behaviourExamine:Wt: 11.8kgBehavioural: Walking around normally, jumped on lap with no issues, alert and responsiveMusculoskeletal: Ambulating normally, able to jump. Some hesitation to sit down in consultation room. Comfortable with HLs extended and flexedAbdominal: gentle palpation was comfortable; aware previous gastrotomy surgeryAssessment:Suspected intervertebral disc impingement - likely minor spinal cord impingement causing neuropathic pain. Good response to Gabapentin suggests. Breed predisposition to disc issues and hemivertebrae .Plan:New Meds/Tx:- Gabapentin 100mg BID-TID for at least 1 week (replacing expired medication from home)Additional Discussion:- Exercise restriction - gentle walks to toilet only, avoid jumping on furniture, stairs, and vigorous activity- Rest spinal area for at least 2-3 days - Monitor for deterioration - if symptoms recur or worsen, may require radiographs or advanced imaging (MRI/CT)- If no improvement with Gabapentin and rest, consider anti-inflammatory medications- Urgent veterinary attention required if neurological deficits developClient Comms:- Explained breed predisposition to disc problems and hemivertebrae- Discussed signs to watch for indicating deterioration- Advised on activity restriction and pain management plan- Follow-up if condition worsens or fails to improveClient emailed 12.46PM 28/2/26Hi there,I had Chunk in the this morning as he was up all night in pain.The vet has given us 100mg gabapanthem to dose him on for the next 3-5 days. He’s still very uncomfortable and unable to lay down and rest.
